Sterilization of Thermometer with Disinfectants

Abstract
In order to determine the optimum exposure time if thermometer in disinfectants for sterilization, 87 str:?ins of various microorganisms isolated from inpatient~~ were tested with 3 binds of disinfectants; Zephiran chloride, alcohol, and cresol.
Gram negative bacilli were susceptible to zephiran chloride. :Most strains were killed within 30 secondsin 0.01. o solution but some strains resisted to 0.04 o for 4 rr-inutes. In alcohol one third of strains were killed within 30 seconds 30% but some of the rest strains resisted to 70 o for 4 minutes, and nearly all strains were sterilized within 30 second in 0.5 o cresol solution.
Strains of Gram negative cocci showed a wide range in their susceptibility patterns, ie, to zephiran chloride ranged from 0.01 to 0.5?;~, to alcohol from 30 ~ to 70 ~ and to cresol from 0.5% to 1.5~~.
Gram positive cocci were highly susceptible to disinfectants. Ytcst strains were l:filed within 30 seconds at lo~,v concentration except some strains of staphylococci.
Candida sp. were resistant to disinfectants, and many strains resisted to 0.~5 o zephirar, chloride, 70% alcohol, and 1.5 o cresol.
It was postulated with these results that thermometer car. be effectively sterilized by exposing for 5 minutes in 0.1% zephiran chloride or 70~;, alcohol or 0.5% cresol solution.
